Colm Egan

Alternative // Castlecomer, Kilkenny

Colm Egan is an Irish musician/singer-songwriter known for his carefully crafted, heartfelt and emotionally stirring songwriting, which incorporates his folk, alternative/indie rock and traditional influences.

Raised in the former coal mining town of Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, song and story were woven into the fabric of daily life and were subsequently absorbed by the musician in his younger years. The voices and stories of everyday folk permeate throughout Colm's body of work. His first song 'The Deerpark Mines' describes the return of an ex-miner to the ruins of his former workplace where he sits in solitude, sadness and memory, contemplating a way of life which has long since passed.

He was invited to Brittany, France in 2010 to open the 'L'air du Large' festival de Bugueles.

His 2012 EP, 'Windows' is an album steeped in classic Americana imagery. Age-old images of the road, the girl, and the night are re-emerging themes which frame the album's view of young romance and innocence, and their place and power within an often suffocating world.

In 2013, he and Michael Conway (The Hole in the Wall) co-wrote the music and lyrics featured in the show 'So Deep Within' which is based on the stories and poetry of ex-miner and Castlecomer native, Seamus Walsh.

In 2016 and now living and performing in Augsburg, Germany, Colm co-wrote and released his second EP, 'The Usual Games' with fellow Irish musician Shaun McBride. The county Tyrone native lent his rusty vocals, keen folk-rock sensibilities and well-honed songwriting skills to the EP. The music marks a more conscious attempt to address the challenges facing contemporary society.

Stories are once again central to his latest offering 'Songs of Healing.' The album sets an honest, reflective, yet optimistic tone as it deals with the tenderness and fragility of life, friendship and hope. Featuring many of the musicians he has worked with since moving to Germany in 2014, it's fair to say that 'Songs of Healing' sees Colm move in new and exciting musical direction for 2018.
