Hailing from Navan, Meath, Alternative rock band Bowery Boy was formed in 2021 by songwriter Paul Clarke (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Barry Fitzgerald (drums), Bowery Boy quickly evolved into a full band when bassist Lenny Lane and lead guitarist Robbie Fitzgerald joined. Drawing inspiration from legends like The Beatles, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, and Queens of the Stone Age, Bowery Boy’s set list ranges from extended rock jams to sharp, three-minute indie anthems.
Bowery Boy released their debut single 'Fortified' in late '24. Recorded at Jam Studios in Ireland the track showcases an evolution in Clarke's songwriting from previous bands Red Queen Contest and The Dolldrums, marked by a heavier sound and the contributions of acclaimed producer and multi-instrumentalist Martin Quinn.
Also recorded in Jam Studios, Bowery Boy's latest single, a heavy-hitting, grunge-influenced and emotionally charged track "Wide Awake" was released on March 7th.
Clarke reflects on the track, stating, “I often feel blessed to use the gift of songwriting to express emotions I would never normally share with the world. For me, Wide Awake is a perfect example of catharsis through creativity. There’s no denying that I was in a dark place while writing it, and there were specific reasons for that. Thankfully, through psychedelic therapy, music and the unwavering support of close friends and family, I was able to navigate that chapter of my life, and come out stronger on the other side."
To support both single releases Bowery Boy also released two music videos, directed and edited by Paul’s cousin and up and coming videographer Gary Clerkin. The video for Wide Awake explores the song theme of trying to cope mental health struggles by depicting Clarke battling with his internal demons by way of a psychedelic journey into the shamanic underworld. The majority of the video was shot in Tara Hill and got over 1000 views on YouTube in the first days of release.
Bowery Boy will be celebrating the new single release with live shows in Fred Zeppelin’s, Cork, April 4th and Whelans (Upstairs), Dublin, on April 8th.
