Charles James and the Rise

Charles James & The Rise are an atmospheric folk band from Donegal, Ireland. Musically the band is influenced by the darker side of folk and the more haunting elements of choral music.

Highlights in 2023 included being named Highland Radio’s winner in Hot Press’ A New Local Hero, playing shows across Ireland as well as Austin, Texas and receiving regional and national airplay. The second half of 2023 was dedicated to recording their debut album. 2024 has kicked off with being named one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s (ES) 20 Artists You Should Know.

Their debut album is due for release later this year. The record was recorded in Attica Audio and overseen by producer Orri McBrearty (Rosie Carney) and featuring contributions by Steve Wickham (The Waterboys) on fiddle and mandolin, Laura McFadden (Arborist) on cello and John Doherty (Little Hours) on backing vocals.

Writing influences include Kris Kristofferson and Leonard Cohen as well as more contemporary songwriters such as Jason Isbell.
