Dark Tropics are a Belfast-based duo comprised of vocalist Rio McGuinness and producer Gerard Sands. Blending cinematic songwriting with modern production, the pair create “pop-noir”, a sound that balances haunting atmosphere with bold, melodic songwriting. Drawing influence from artists like Radiohead, Aretha Franklin and The Velvet Underground, their music combines timeless sensibilities with a contemporary edge.
The duo have amassed over one million streams across digital platforms and received significant international radio support. Their releases have been championed by Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music, Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2, and featured across BBC Radio 1. Their music has also been playlisted by SiriusXM, Radio X, KCRW and KEXP, alongside strong support across Irish radio including RTÉ Radio 1, 2FM, Today FM and BBC Radio Ulster.
Fronted by Rio’s striking, expressive vocals and distinctive visuals, and shaped by Gerard’s understated yet dynamic production, Dark Tropics explore themes of lust, heartbreak, betrayal and defiance through richly layered arrangements and poetic lyricism. Often compared to artists such as Florence + The Machine and Fleetwood Mac, their sound balances classic influences with contemporary production.
Recently awarded BPI MEGS funding, Dark Tropics continue to build momentum internationally, touring across the UK and Ireland including a sold-out Irish tour supporting Belle and Sebastian and their own sold-out headline shows in Belfast and Dublin. Their music has also featured in BBC and RTÉ television productions.
