Hong Kong Nocturne are a three-piece band formed in the heart of Derry City in the North of Ireland, comprising of brothers Gavin and Rion McCartney and long-time friend and musical collaborator John Keaveney.
Drawing on influences from genre-defying acts such as Deus, Neu!, Teenage Fanclub, and XTC, the band’s debut album, 'Hinterland' was released in August 2024 and brings together a blend of introspective songwriting with a sound that's been described as "T-Rex fronted by Howard Devoto."
Featuring politically-charged lyrics on the issues that matter - from global and societal challenges and commentary on online algorithms through to the local environmental controversy of goldmining in rural Ireland, the album epitomises how Hong Kong Nocturne are unafraid of taking a stand.
The band’s first three singles have had airplay on BBC Foyle & BBC Ulster, and most recently across the UK on New Music Fix on BBC Radio 6.
This, combined with their live shows at the Atlantic Sessions festival and recent gigs in Sandinos, the renowned home of live music in Derry has secured their reputation as a band to watch out for.
