JOSIE

Soul // Derry, Derry // She/Her

Born in 1973 in Derry, Josie Doherty has been steeped in music from the start. Whether it was belting out Jackson 5 hits at family parties or harmonizing Motown classics with her best friend Bronagh, her talent and passion for music were undeniable. At just 9, she joined the Long Tower Folk Group, setting the stage for a lifelong love of performance.
Josie’s musical journey took a bold turn at 19 when she moved to Dublin. Open mic nights at McDaid’s and The International Bar honed her powerful, soulful style. Soon, she was a regular in Dublin’s vibrant music scene, performing with funk and soul bands, and becoming a go-to session singer. Iconic venues like Whelan’s, Slane Castle, and the National Concert Hall became her playgrounds. A career highlight came in 1997 when Josie wrote and performed a song for Jim Sheridan’s film The Boxer, starring Daniel Day-Lewis. Yet, one of her most cherished moments was singing at the National Concert Hall as her ailing parents watched with pride, her father softly saying, “That’s my daughter.”
Josie’s song-writing process is as organic as her musical journey. Inspiration strikes in the most unexpected moments, with choruses often coming to her first, setting the foundation for her heartfelt lyrics. Josie’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and a deep love for music. Her journey continues as she captivates audiences with her soulful voice and heartfelt songs.
Together with her song-writing partner, life-long friend and guitarist, Joe Donegan, she’s now ready to start sharing her unique voice with the world. Come on the journey!
