Polar Bolero

Alternative // Derry

Shortlisted for NI music prize 2023 “live act of the year” Polar Bolero, is a new Alt Folk collective led by multi-instrumentalists Cahir McLaughlin and Pearse Donaghy. The band are named after Pearse’s favourite childhood book with the blessing of the author Debi Gliori. Starting in early 2022 they embarked on an ambitious plan of recording their debut album ‘A Conversation,’ with aim to release in mid 2024, following promotional singles. ‘A Conversation,’ conceptually deals with issues of disillusionment and melancholy whilst living in post-pandemic, post-Troubles NI. The band tethers their original songs together with snippets of candid interviews with members of the NI public, varying in age, gender, race and public influence to provide a level of necessary reality and diversity in perspective while dealing with this subject matter.

"The eclectic new band Polar Bolero have made themselves known with new release 'Portrait'. The single, which is only their third, shows that they are far beyond their years in terms of their craft.

The use of a wide variety of instrumentation mixed with a certain accessibility is an interesting mix to say the least. Clever lyricism and a thought provoking message makes the newcomers a really interesting prospect in the music industry.

Ireland is full of talent, that's for sure, and it seems Polar Bolero are carving a name for themselves alongside the likes of Snow Patrol, Fontaines D.C. and more as a force to be reckoned with. If 'Portait' is any indication of what's to come next, we're in for a treat! Be sure to check it out below."
