I am Roy Shiels. I'm an independent musician & songwriter from the seaside town, of Rush, Dublin, Ireland. A multi instrumentalist, decent at guitar, bass guitar, drums, one-finger-piano & singing. I write, perform, produce & record in a rock & acoustic styles.
In 2009 I released my debut record, a 5 song EP named "The Teenage Storm" & toured it all across Ireland in every shit-hole venue imaginable, as well as some nice ones :) 10 years on, I released my debut, full length, studio album "Big Kiss" (that didn't take long) :O
My earliest & most inspiring musical memory is listening to Buddy Holly's "Everyday” on scratchy vinyl with my big bro, Gav, on a stormy winter's evening when I was about 7 years old. The memory has always stayed with me - the contrast of the biting cold, dark night outside our window & the warm/safe feeling I got from a simple/innocent 50s pop song, instilled the power of music in my heart & inspired me to spend the rest of my life learning how to & eventually making my own.
I've been influenced by countless bands/artists from many genres throughout my life though it's people like Smashing Pumpkins, Slint, Tom Petty, Weezer, Tom Waits, CCR, Arcade Fire, Beach Boys & My Bloody Valentine that have had the most profound affect on me & my music.
My all time favourite record & the album that literally lifts me out of my body is Smashing Pumpkins' "Melon Collie And The Infinite Sadness".
