Stephen Star

Folk // Dublin, Dublin // he/him

Stephen Star is the alias of Dublin musician, Stephen Sorensen. Stephen started recording music at the age of 14 on an old Yamaha portastudio. Writing lo-fi rock songs in his bedroom and painstakingly producing runs of cassettes with handmade art, distributing them to friends and beyond.

This led to ‘Stalker’, a self-released LP in 2020, inspired by the likes of Todd Rundgren and Arthur Russell. Stalker is a journey through Stephen’s imagination, a concept album about the murder of a fictional rock star. With exaggerated lyrics, wobbling bass lines and kitschy synths - it wears its heart on its sleeve and pulls you in.

Five years in gestation, what follows is ‘Newt’, an album rooted far more in personal facts than ‘Stalker’s’ fiction .’Newt’ focuses entirely on fingerstyle acoustic guitar, enveloped in field recordings. Stephen stated he wanted “to make something in between Grouper and Jim Croce”. This album is a homemade folk oddity, a meditation on adolescence, religion and nature.
